Music files are small. So a 32 bits is fast for rendering music. Rendering even complex music files, is nothing compared to rendering video. Especially the video Movie Studio is capable of producing. Thus 64 bit is an upgrade! Sony just decided to remove the words "Vegas", "HD", and "Production". I will update my opinion, as soon as I receive and use the product.
I may have to eat Humble Pie, but I don't let that deter me from what I expect to be a good upgrade after mastering Windows Movie Maker. Let's Face it, most people examining this product are looking to upgrade from something simpler, but they're not looking for something as complex as "full on" Premier or Vegas. Very nice! Besides the extras on the bonus disks, the main program contains many many different video transitions, video effects, as well as the same for audio. You really don't need any of the things on the extras disk. But they are powerful tools, that allow for creative freedom. But, if you dig deeper on the original program disk, after you have installed, you can open and explore the folders, and find 50 royalty free Sony music tracks.
And something I didn't see advertised; high quality sound effects. The main program is easy to use, if you have an interest in video editing. But just like buying a guitar will not make you know how to play it, you have to want to edit your videos! Sony provides at a cost, many instructional DVDs use can buy and learn how to use this. This support is what I've already experienced with Sony's Acid Pro 7. It fulfilled my expectations. So, if I want to know how to add a title, I watch a video, then implement.
How to fuzz out a license plate? I don't try to learn the whole thing. I just learn new things as I go. If I wonder how to do something, I look it up. The program itself is professional grade. It works fast and smooth. Renders are very tight and sharp. It is a good choice. Top critical review. Movie Studio Platinum 12 Suite is pretty awesome in its capabilities, but you'd almost never know it from the documentation. Unlike its big brother, Vegas Pro, there's no complete manual available.
The only documentation, and you'll find it on the disk, as well as on Sony's site mislabeled as a manual, is an page "Quick Start Guide" about 92 pages with warnings and preface.
You won't find anything in that about using envelopes to edit between a multiple-camera shoot, or about how to do punch-ins. Or where to keep the clips you're cutting out and trying to rearrange hint: on the timeline itself, to the right of your project. Or even how to vary the output quality or aspect ratio if you're writing to DVD, or even how to select the range being rendered. Or a multitude of other things you need to know. You're left scouring Youtube for how-to videos, usually for previous versions, and easter-egg hunting on your own.
Why Sony can't do an edit of it and make it available for this product is beyond me. Even worse, though, is the product's technical requirement mislabeling.
While the base product does run with the Intel , and runs quite well rendering time on my complicated project was about 2 minutes for every minute of video, using the i7 Quad core laptop I bought specifically for this , NewBlueFX refuses to run at all.
That company confirms its incompatibility with the hardware. It's still early days for me, but I already have one more gripe. Movie Studio Platinum is a very powerful product, capable of excellent output, easy to add source material, and a good edit workflow, but the poor documentation, the misinformation about requirements and the poorly integrated companion programs guarantee endless frustration and a steep and difficult learning curve.

The problem I was having though was what instructional resources I could find on the web did not align up with what I was seeing on my screen so I looked further for other options.
Reading a magazine review of different editors I found the Sony Movie Studio series to be highly rated and further research showed that there was a wealth of online resources dedicated to the software as well. As well, related to Muvipix, you can find this book on Amazon which I just got myself and find it very informative: The Muvipix.
When you first open the program a window will pop up with three options; one for starting a new project, one labeled 'Show Me How', and one to just start using the software. Clicking the second one will guide you through getting started and such.
You can also click on the 'Show Me How' option when you have the program already running. Nosing around on the Application DVD through Windows Explorer I found a folder called 'Jump Start Tutorials' which has 8 tutorial videos in it you can watch; I copied them to my computer from the disc about mb so I can review them as needed.
There is also a folder labeled Manuals and it has subfolders with various languages, I have not tried but you may be able to print one from there. Having only recently started using the program I can of course only give you a first impression; and that would be that it is a very feature rich application whose vast resources understandably come with a bit of a learning curve; but nothing that should send anyone who has just even a little computer experience running away; there is just too much 3rd party support out there.
However if you are truly looking for something to get your creative juices flowing then this holds a great deal of potential. As well; v12 is something that has been out a while and has had a number of updates to shake out bugs. Any hesitation I felt when researching this program and seeing the apparent complexity of the screen pretty much diminished after watching a good number of the 3rd party videos on youtube.
While waiting for the package to arrive I used both my camcorder Sony HDR-PJ and phone Moto X to take some short videos and now that I have it in hand I have been playing with what I captured to practice making simple videos with titles for when I have a real project I want to work on; piece of cake.
The only problem I have had so far was when going through the library of potential titles to use clicking on the NewBlueFX 3D option caused the program to crash; that could be though because of the limits of my particular computer. If you want to have something you can really play with and explore your potential this would be something I can comfortably suggest you look into; less than that you might want to look elsewhere.

Notification came up saying that the software failed to start - I was then presented with a feedback form to fill out. After filling in my start-up conditions, I was presented with a download link for an update. I downloaded and installed the update. I did a cold boot on my computer. I attempted to start the software again, and was presented with the exact same response.
I attempted to contact Sony Creative Software support, but discovered that since I installed the software after their support office closed, I am forced to try to get support the next day. The processor is an Intel I7 3. Attempting to contact Sony product support was interesting - their answering system did NOT make it easy to talk to someone. The only option naming product support, was asking if I wanted to "purchase" a product support contract.
Since there was no other option relating to support, I pressed that number - and was connected to their "free" support line. After contacting customer support and reviewing the issues I had experienced, the technician said that I had two issues. The first was related to the "Quicktime" version I had installed, and second, the driver software for my video card conflicted with any effort to turn off the hardware acceleration.
Sony sent me an email with links to instructions on how to un-install a portion of my driver software. The portion of the driver that gets un-installed is related to the hardware acceleration. I have un-installed "Quick-Time", and am waiting to evaluate the Sony software performance, before re-installing it. After following their instructions on un-installing a portion of my video driver, the Sony software has performed as advertised, thus far.
Overall: Their software, itself, appears to be doing what I purchased it for. My primary problem appears to have stemed from there being a lack of information regarding video cards and their drivers to allow use of their software. Neither the Amazon listing of the software, relating to features or requirements , nor the labeling on the side of the "off the shelf" box I received, contained the information that would have saved me the trouble I experienced. I can't see how to slow down a scrolling text, or how to adjust its placement on the screen. I have tried all the obvious clicks and menus, but nothing seems to work Please can you help? Derek, just a follow up, I am using Movie Studio Platinum Derek, I have a laptop which has three drives.
Drive C where the soft ware is loaded. Drive D and Drive E. I download by videos to either D or E spending on available space. I the preference window, there is Temporary files folder which now indicates Drive C.
I have been sending the videos thru renders to the D or E drive and want to continue along those lines. How do I make sure that I will be able to find my finished videos so that I can forward those to You tube. You can also find me on YouTube , Facebook , Twitter.
